The scapula, commonly known as the shoulder blade, is a flat, triangular-shaped bone located in the upper back on either side of the thorax. It plays a crucial role in the movement and stabilization of the shoulder joint and serves as a site for the attachment of numerous muscles. Key Features of the Scapula: Shape and Position: The scapula is triangular with three borders (superior, medial, and lateral) and three angles (superior, inferior, and lateral). It lies between the second and seventh ribs on the posterior thoracic wall. Processes: Acromion: A bony extension that articulates with the clavicle to form the acromioclavicular joint. Coracoid Process: A hook-like structure that serves as an attachment point for muscles and ligaments. Spine of the Scapula: A prominent ridge that divides the scapula into the supraspinous and infraspinous fossae. Dorsal Surface (Posterior): Features the supraspinous and infraspinous fossae, separated by the spine of the scapula.
