Crocodiles live in warm regions. All species frequent fresh water (even the marine crocodile, especially during the humid tropical seasons). They live submerged in stagnant waterways where they spend their days stalking their prey. They can stay underwater for 50 minutes, enough time to set up ambushes. They are very agile in the water, but rather clumsy on land, although they can run quite fast. Crocodiles are perfectly adapted to life in the water. Their lungs can move to the front or back of their body. This ability allows them to keep their heads below water and their bodies submerged, completely hidden in muddy swamps. Their eyes, ears and nostrils are placed high on the skull, allowing them to see, breathe and hear what is going on around them while they remain unnoticed by their prey. The crocodile is one of the largest reptiles. The marine crocodile and the Nile crocodile reach or exceed 7 meters in length. They feed on animals that come to drink from the river, capture them with their powerful jaws and drag them to the bottom of the water to drown them. Their jaws can develop a force of more than 22 kN. They have several pairs of muscles that allow them to generate this deadly mechanism. One pair of muscles located at the back of their head allows them to produce the force necessary to rise out of the water and surprise their prey with a fatal bite and two pairs of muscles located at the ends of their jaws to prevent their skulls from shattering.
