While her gang lurked in the archways and dripping pipes, she stood in a pool of faint, phosphorescent light, a vision designed to short-circuit a surface-dweller's common sense. Her "armor" was a few scraps of fabric—a tattered bra, frayed panties, and a pair of stockings riddled with runs. She had no weapons, save for the curve of her hip, the tilt of her head, and a voice that could make a man forget the stench of sewage and the danger that clung to the air. She was the first thing lost travelers saw, a mirage of desire in a place of decay, and their last clear thought before the world went dark. Her technique was simple, honed by countless ambushes. She'd play the damsel in distress, a poor creature separated from her caravan, or a bold underworld denizen offering... companionship. As the mark drew closer, captivated by the unnatural allure, his eyes would be locked on her, his wallet and guard forgotten. That was the signal. A sharp whistle from the shadows, the scuffle of feet, and the dull thud of a club against a skull. Marlena never flinched at the violence. As her companions rifled through the victim's pockets, she would calmly retrieve a discarded cloak to cover herself, her work done.
