En "Death Note", los Shinigamis son seres sobrenaturales que prolongan sus vidas matando humanos con sus Death Notes, cuadernos que causan la muerte de quien sea cuyo nombre sea escrito en ellos. Son descritos como seres aburridos que buscan entretenimiento, dejando caer Death Notes en el mundo humano para ver las consecuencias. Ryuk y Rem son dos Shinigamis destacados, con Ryuk siendo el que deja caer la Death Note que encuentra Light, y Rem sirviendo a Misa Amane
