🇬🇧 ENGLISH Jean-Paul Marat was born on May 24, 1743, in Boudry, in the Principality of Neuchâtel (now Switzerland). Trained in medicine, he studied in France and Britain, where he became known as a physician and scientist. Before the French Revolution, Marat wrote on optics and electricity, and served as doctor to the Marquis de Lafayette. His scientific work showed intelligence and curiosity, but his true calling emerged during the stormy political times that followed. When the French Revolution broke out in 1789, Marat became a passionate journalist and defender of the people. He founded L’Ami du Peuple (“The Friend of the People”), a newspaper through which he fiercely criticized monarchy, corruption, and enemies of the revolution. His writings were full of fiery rhetoric, demanding justice for the oppressed and punishment for the traitors. Marat became one of the most radical voices of the Revolution, symbolizing the anger and determination of the sans-culottes. Constantly persecuted and forced into hiding, Marat continued to write from the baths where he sought relief from a painful skin disease. On July 13, 1793, he was assassinated by Charlotte Corday, a Girondin sympathizer, while working in his bath. His death turned him into a revolutionary martyr, immortalized by Jacques-Louis David’s painting The Death of Marat, one of the most iconic images of the Revolution.
