The term light cruiser emerged in the 19th century and was initially referred to as a frigate. During the sailing era, escort ships referred to small, fast, long-range, lightly armored vessels (with only one gun deck) that were typically used for patrolling, delivering letters, and destroying enemy merchant ships. The main body of the fleet is composed of battleships, which are much larger and slower than frigates. Escort ships generally evade such warships and do not participate in fleet battles between such warships. The earliest ironclad ships only had one gun deck because their armor was too heavy to be equipped with multiple gun decks like earlier sailing battleships. Despite being large ships with cannons and capable of fighting like battleships, they are still referred to as escort ships. Therefore, the meaning of the word "frigate" began to change, and the original small sailboat was renamed a cruiser. File format: STL OBJ
