I’ve designed and fabricated a mechanical spring scale. Yes, I know that humanity has had them for centuries, and that we now have electronic load cells which are more precise, versatile, robust, and compact. But, have you ever seen or heard of a spring scale which uses binder clips as the springs? I didn’t think so. In fact, I haven’t found any documented mention of a spring scale which uses cantilever springs at all. So I made one. This design measures weights between about 6 and 20 lbs. A tare weight will be required if something lighter than that is to be weighed. Although I calibrated with 15 weights, due to variations between binder clips, if you make one you’ll need to calibrate with a few known weights, and the more you use, the more precise the scale will be. Obviously, it is not approved by any official bureau, department, or office of weights & measures, so don’t use it for sales. But recommended applications include: • General • Kitchen • Shop/Garage • Farmer’s Market/Roadside produce stand • Education • Décor Sept. 2023 edit: If you're looking for more sensitivity, I've made an improved version. This one prints without supports. [creation improved-binder-clip-spring-scale]
