Sin Şın Stone

Description

Regarding the story of the Sin stone; Sultan Selim and the great scholar of the time, Ibn-i Kemal Kemal-paşazade, while reading a book by Muhyiddin-i Arabi, came across a cryptic expression on one page: "When Sin enters Shin, the tomb of Mim appears." Both the Sultan and the scholar understood and deciphered this coded expression. Ibn-i Arabi, or Muhyiddin-i Arabi, a Sufi author who had a great influence on Sufism and the history of Islamic thought, died in 1240 in Damascus, in the mansion of the Banu Zaki. He was buried in the cemetery of the Kadi Muhyiddin Ibn-i Zaki family, located in the Salihiye district at the foot of Mount Qasiyun. Later, this place, where both of his sons were buried, fell into disrepair and was forgotten as a result of the anti-Sufi propaganda that spread in the Damascus region in subsequent periods. Approximately three hundred years later, after winning the Battle of Marj Dabiq on August 24, 1516, Sultan Selim I entered Aleppo, and two weeks later he left, reaching Damascus at the end of September. Together with Kemalpaşazade, they searched for and found the tomb, which had been ruined and lost centuries earlier due to the influence of some Syrian scholars who had misunderstood and opposed his works. They concluded that the letter "Sin" in Muhyiddin-i Arabi's coded sentence referred to Selim, "Shin" to Damascus, and "Mim" to Muhyiddin. Therefore, the identified tomb was unearthed.
