P.38-J Lightning “Bullet Plane” - WWII-Era Trench Art (Submitted by: R. Nix, Concord, VA) Popular during the downtime of WWI, “trench art” was a means of expression for soldiers on all sides of the war and a way to pass the time using whatever materials were on hand. Many examples of trench art are made out of brass shell casings due to their abundance on the battlefield and the more pliable nature of the material. This example is a WWII-era piece. Depicting an American fighter, this P.38-J Lightning model is made out of .45 caliber and .50 caliber bullets, as well as two full-size 30.06 cartridges. The wings are crafted out spent casings from the .50 caliber rounds. These three types of ammunition were the most common rounds used by the U.S. Military in WWII.
