Cet objet décoratif atténue l'humidité d'une pièce. Il est passif et naturel. La couche de gros sel sur le tamis capte l'humidité dans l'air. L'effet se ressent après quelques jours à la première utilisation. Le gros sel devient pâteux après environ dix jours avec un taux d'humidité de 70%. C'est le moment de le changer. Le gel de silice remplace le gros sel avec l'avantage de changer de couleur à la saturation d'eau. L'objet sert aussi de porte encens.
