The Widmanstätten structure forms due to the slow cooling and crystallization of iron-nickel alloys in space. These alloys form a matrix inside the meteorite. During cooling, specific crystal structures known as kamacite and taenite develop. Kamacite crystals have a hexagonal structure, while taenite crystals have a cubic structure. What makes the Widmanstätten structure special is that it can only form under very slow cooling conditions.
