La BB 7003 est le prototype de la SNCF qui permit la mise au point de la traction par hacheurs à thyristors. Cette machine produite en 1974 sur la base de la BB 15007 préfigurait la série des BB 72001, fonctionnant sous courant continu 1.5 kV. Elle sera à son tour, en 1982, transformée en BB 10003, un prototype de locomotive à moteur asynchrone. La BB 7003 a été reproduite à l'échelle HO par la firme LS Models dans sa version sans carénage caractéristique d'une des cabines.
