Load Cage – 5 W Low-Current Automotive Test Load (W5W / T10) The Circuit Evaluation Cage – 5 W version is designed for modern automotive electrical diagnostics, where traditional high-power test lamps are no longer safe to use. This load cage simulates a real incandescent load using either a 12 V or 24 V W5W / T10 bulb, depending on the vehicle’s system voltage. It allows safe testing of ECU-, BCM-, and module-controlled outputs without triggering fault codes or damaging sensitive electronic drivers. Why This Load Cage Exists? Modern vehicles (12 V passenger vehicles and 24 V trucks, buses, and heavy equipment) use: Transistor- and MOSFET-driven outputs Active current monitoring Short-circuit and over-current protection Using a 21 W or 55 W test lamp on these circuits can: Shut down the output Log permanent fault codes Damage control modules This 5 W incandescent load stays within the safe operating range of most control outputs, while still providing a true filament-based current draw that LEDs and multimeters cannot replicate.
