The E49 submunition is a U.S.-developed anti-tank and anti-materiel bomblet designed for use in cluster munitions. It features an explosively formed penetrator (EFP) capable of piercing armored vehicles and other hardened targets. The E49 is typically dispensed from artillery shells or missile warheads, scattering multiple submunitions over a target area for wide-area effects. It is designed to increase lethality and area coverage against enemy armor formations while reducing the need for direct hits from larger munitions.
