Trilobites were among the most successful and long-lived creatures in Earth’s history. These marine arthropods first appeared over 520 million years ago during the Cambrian Period and thrived in the world’s oceans for nearly 270 million years before becoming extinct in the great mass extinction at the end of the Permian Period.Trilobites had a hard external shell, segmented bodies, and jointed legs. They ranged in size from less than an inch to over two feet long and occupied a variety of ecological niches.One of the most remarkable features of trilobites was their sophisticated compound eyes, which are among the earliest known eyes in the fossil record.
