George Bullock, William Hey by University of Leeds Cultural Collections & Galleries

A sculptor, cabinet maker and marble mason, Bullock worked in Birmingham and Liverpool before settling in London. He furnished Sir Walter Scott’s home and was celebrated for his portrait busts, furnitureand interiors. The subject, William Hey, was a pioneering Leeds surgeon. He founded the Leeds General Infirmary and served as its senior surgeon for nearly 40 years. Twice mayor of Leeds and a Fellow of the Royal Society, he was known for surgical innovations and civic leadership. His humane practice and scientific rigor shaped modern medicine. This bust was commissioned by Benjamin Gott of Armley, who supplied Bullock with a life mask of Hey. The portrait is thought to have entered the University’s collection in 1930s through a bequest from the family.
