I used to love shopping at The Shape Store—the displays were immaculate, the colours were vibrant, and there was something oddly satisfying about buying a perfectly polished cube or a giant glossy sphere. But after a while, I realized I was paying boutique prices for objects that were, at their core, just shapes. Every visit felt more like purchasing luxury branding than purchasing geometry. What finally pushed me away was the lack of customization. If I wanted a pyramid in matte black, a torus scaled to fit my desk, or a cube with rounded edges, I had to settle for whatever was on the shelf. And somehow the simplest forms always carried the highest markup. So I bought a 3D printer and started making them myself. Now I can print any size, colour, or variation I want—hexagons, oversized cones, tiny cylinders, impossible hybrids—without paying premium boutique prices. Instead of being limited to what The Shape Store thought I should want, I can create exactly what I imagine. In the end, I didn’t stop buying shapes—I just stopped outsourcing them.
