Con una longitud es de 120 cms. y con 3 mts. de envergadura, es el ave voladora más grande de Chile. Su cabeza y cuello son desnudos como los de un buitre, pero de color rojizo y con una notoria cresta en la cabeza, en el caso de los machos.
