This marble statue of pan is actually a decorative support for a table, created in the Roman Imperial period in the 1st or 2nd Century AD, currently on loan by the Judy and Michael Steinhardt Collection of New York. All of the unpredictable, animalistic energy of the goat-god Pan is embodied in this powerful arching figure. Standing next to a tree trunk covered with an animal skin, holding an object behind his back, the god of wild nature thrusts forward from the stone support. The Roman love of contrasting coloured stones his beautifully conveyed in this work with its white marble statue set against a dark grey pier and base, which are decorated with geometrical insets of light grey marble. This object is part of "Scan The World".
