Within the Buddhist faith, a Bodhisattva is a being who has attained the capacity for enlightenment but has vowed not to accept full Buddhahood until all sentient beings have been enlightened. Avalokiteshvara is often shown carrying a lotus, a beautiful flower which grows out of muddy water, symbolizing the potential of all beings to attain enlightement.
