Yet not all his charges began life as birds or beasts. In the maddened rituals of the court, sometimes unfortunate children are offered to the Falconer’s care. Some are “lucky” enough to vanish without a trace; others emerge transformed, their limbs twisted into winged horrors, their screams becoming the chorus of the circus acts. Each new performer, whether born of bone or flesh, is draped in scraps of bright cloth, painted talons, and tinkling bells — a grotesque mockery of carnival splendour.
