Liu Kang (Chinese 劉康, pinyin: Liúkāng) is a fictional character in the Mortal Kombat fighting video game series, introduced as one of the original seven characters in the first game in 1992 as a Shaolin monk who enters the Mortal Kombat tournament to save The Earth. After his victory in the tournament, Liu Kang becomes the hero of the Mortal Kombat series as the champion and chief defender of Earth guided by his mentor, the thunder god Raiden. He also becomes romantically involved with Princess Kitana, the adopted daughter of the evil Emperor of the Outer World Shao Kahn. Designed with special moves intended to be easier to perform than the other characters' moves, Liu Kang has appeared in many of the Mortal Kombat, in addition to starring with Kung Lao and characters from the action-adventure title Mortal Kombat Shaolin Monks, and is among the eleven characters from the series representing the franchise in the Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe crossover game. Liu Kang has appeared extensively in Mortal Kombat media and official merchandise, being the main protagonist of the two feature films and Malibu Comics. Comic book adaptations, as well as supporting roles in other media, such as the 1995 Mortal Kombat novel and the animated series Mortal Kombat: Defenders of the Realm.
