The Ballon d'Or is a prestigious annual award granted by the French magazine France Football to the best soccer player in the world. The word "Ballon d'Or" means "Golden Ball" in French. This award is highly coveted and is considered one of the most prestigious individual awards a soccer player can receive. Since its creation in 1956, the Ballon d'Or has been awarded based on the individual performance of players throughout the calendar year. A list of voters, usually composed of sports journalists from around the world, selects the winner based on his performance in national and international competitions, as well as his contribution to the success of his team. Several of the biggest names in world football have won the Ballon d'Or over the years, including Pelé, Diego Maradona, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. The award is a source of great pride and prestige for the players who receive it, often a high point in their careers.
