The hip bone, also known as the coxal bone or pelvic bone, is a large, irregular bone that forms the lateral and anterior walls of the pelvic girdle. In adults, it is a fused structure of three primary bones: Ilium: The largest and uppermost part, forming the flared superior portion of the hip bone. It features the iliac crest, a prominent ridge palpable along the top of the hip. Ischium: The posterior and inferior part, forming the "sit bone" that supports the body's weight when seated. It includes the ischial tuberosity. Pubis: The anterior and inferior part, meeting its counterpart from the opposite side at the pubic symphysis. Together, the two hip bones, along with the sacrum and coccyx, form the bony pelvis, which provides support for the vertebral column, protects the pelvic organs (bladder, reproductive organs, parts of the large intestine), and serves as an attachment point for numerous muscles of the trunk and lower limbs. The hip joint, a ball-and-socket joint, is formed by the articulation of the head of the femur (thigh bone) with the acetabulum, a deep socket on the lateral aspect of the hip bone.
