Tiama skim over the waves in great flying shoals with their elongated mouths extended over the water as they weave in and out of the exposed coral structures of the Strands, snatching the many insects that flit about the undulating colorful fronds. At three to four feet long, these creatures fall prey to many predators of both land and sea, surviving only by the coordinated quick movements of their shoal and always alert, orb-like eyes that dart back and forth, looking for the slightest sign of danger. When threatened and escape is no longer an option, the shoal will turn on the aggressor like a storm of razor sharp fins, leaving any would-be-predator bleeding and sinking beneath the waves as the shoal flies past.
