Shoebill Stork The shoebill stork (Balaeniceps rex), also known as the whalebill, is an elusive and prehistoric-looking bird native to the freshwater marshes of tropical East Africa. Standing up to five feet tall with a massive eight-foot wingspan, it is easily recognized by its enormous, shoe-shaped bill that ends in a sharp, curved hook.
