Originally known as Marcosito,the son of scavengers Marcos and Imelda, Cito's life changed when the settlement they lived in was attacked by super mutants in his youth,. His father was killed quickly and his mother escaped but was severely wounded; she survived long enough to write a note asking the reader to look after her son before succumbing to her injuries. The adolescent Cito wandered for a time, eventually managing to reach the area of Safari Adventure in Nuka-World. There, he encountered a pack of ghoulified gorillas living in the primate house, who took him in and raised him like one of their own. Despite the severely limited circumstances of his upbringing, Cito still managed to grow into a healthy adult, including having a grasp of English (he taught himself by reading old educational displays around the zoo exhibits), albeit with a stunted speech pattern due to living most of his developmental life among creatures who do not speak.[4] Sometime before or during 2287, Cito was in the primate house when Darren McDermot (whom Cito remembers as "Wrinkly Man") stumbled in, dying from the injuries he suffered attempting to shut off the Nuka-Gen replicator, which was creating an army of gatorclaws. Cito tried to nurse him back to health, but the scientist was more concerned with getting help to finish his mission, giving his instructions to Cito before passing away.
