Often heard more than seen along undersea cliffs, billowing clouds of grit obscure several vortautili that slam and grind into stone to dislodge barnacles and clams, grasping them in their black tentacles. With adaptations to survive the frigid depths and migrations to colder climes, the vortautilus’ is suffused with an ethanol-like fluids that allows them to function in waters that most other aquatic life would suffer a slow torpor. These cephalopod take advantage of the lack in competition during the colder seasons. When sheets of ice begin to form in the depths of winter, resonating deep cracking sounds are often heard as they spin violently into the ice, creating new waterways to search for their favored prey, or, as the new year dawns, slamming into each other, competing for mates.
