Iansã (Oya): The Goddess of Winds, Lightning, and Transformation Iansã, also commonly known as Oya in Yoruba tradition, is one of the most powerful and revered Orishas (deities) in the Afro-Brazilian religions of Candomblé and Umbanda, as well as in the Yoruba religion of West Africa. She represents the fierce and untamed forces of nature and the human spirit. Domains and Powers Weather and Elements: She is the commanding mistress of the winds, storms, hurricanes, and lightning. While Xangô (Shango) owns the thunder, it is Iansã who creates the lightning bolt itself. The Realm of the Dead (Egun): Uniquely among the female Orishas, Iansã acts as the guardian of the gates of the underworld. She has dominion over the spirits of the dead (Eguns) and guides them to the afterlife. She is the only Orisha capable of facing the Eguns without fear, often depicted leading them with her magical flywhisk. Transformation: She is associated with rapid change and transformation, symbolizing the movement that sweeps away the old to make way for the new.
