The shuttle top panel part feeds up into his chest for robot mode. The side panels fold over to cover the holes in the sides of shuttle mode and do not interfere with other modes. They are attached with double sided tape. Also, thigh fillers. Nothing needs to be removed for transformation (aside from the mentioned chest issue).
