Originally, he was a human being named Elliot Spencer, a British army captain traumatized by the horrors of World War I. Disillusioned with humanity and God, Spencer sought extreme pleasures and forbidden experiences, which led him to solve the riddle of the Lament Configuration, a puzzle box that serves as a portal to Hell. Upon opening it, he was transformed into a Cenobite, an extradimensional being who does not distinguish between pleasure and pain.
